England captain Joe Root has backed his side to achieve “something special” in this year’s Ashes in Australia once they registered a second successive test series win at home with a three-day victory over West Indies.

A nine-wicket triumph in the final and next test against West Indies sealed England’s 2-1 victory under the leadership after a 3-1 triumph over South Africa of Root.

“I’m contented with the way the whole group is forming up. Guys have awakened and taken their matches forward,” Root to the British media.

Root was especially pleased with the team’s capacity to dig deep after two second-test defeats during the South Africa and West Indies series.

“There are just two tough weeks, but what is most gratifying is the durability and character to return from both of these with two extra powerful performances.”

Even though England are yet to announce the final squad to their Ashes defence starting Nov. 23 at Brisbane, trainer Trevor Bayliss indicated they were not able to gamble on new faces.

“We’re not 100 per cent (certain) on who we want,” Australian Bayliss said. “But I’m sure if we sit down at a week or two to discuss that group out of a batting point of view… batters who have played for us at the previous 12-18 months.

“We’re likely going to win. We’re not going to make up the amounts.”

England and West Indies at five one-day internationals along with a Twenty20 will next meet starting on Saturday.
