West Indies all-rounder Marlon Samuels cleared to bowl in international cricket

The 36-year-old was last reported for bowling actions through the Galle Test against Sri Lanka in October 2015 and was then suspended for 12 weeks in December 2015.

West Indian all-rounder Marlon Samuels was on Thursday cleared to bowl in international cricket after his action was shown to be legal, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced here.

The 36-year-old was suspended for 12 weeks in December 2015 after an independent evaluation revealed he had used an illegal bowling action and was last reported for bowling action through the Galle Test against Sri Lanka in October 2015.

“The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced that after remedial work and reassessment, the bowling actions of West Indies Marlon Samuels has been discovered to be legal, and the participant can now restart bowling in international cricket,” the ICC said in a statement.

“On January 29, Samuels failed a reassessment of his bowling action at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough at which it had been disclosed that the quantity of elbow extension for many of his own off-spin deliveries was inside the 15-degree amount of endurance allowed under the ICC regulations for the review of bowlers reported with suspected illegal bowling actions.”

“The umpires are still at liberty to report Samuels when they believe he is displaying a suspect action and not reproducing the legal activity from the reassessment. To help the umpires, they’ll be provided with graphics and video footage of their bowler’s remodelled legal bowling action,” the statement added.

He’ll be asked to undertake further evaluation of his bowling action, if Samuels is reported again.
