ICC mulling bid for cricket inclusion in 2024 Olympic Games : News, Cricket

The time is right for cricket to go back to the Olympics along with a choice on applying for inclusion in 2024 will need to be produced within weeks said on Thursday.

The creator of the modern Olympics was enthusiastic about cricket, a sport dominated by Britain and British colonies such as India and Australia, but it has featured at a Games – at Paris in 1900.

“We need to create a determination by, I imagine, July of this year to ensure people could submit an application by September,” Dave Richardson, chief executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC), told reporters.

“And of course it is not exactly what cricket needs, its whether the IOC wants us.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will choose between 2024 bid cities Paris and Los Angeles in a meeting in Lima in September, together with brand new sports too under consideration. Baseball and softball have been set to reunite at 2020 in Tokyo.

Richardson said it did not matter which town won the bid.

“The two (cities) will … likely be opportunistic for us, especially the U.S. alternative, but also in Europe,” he said in the SportsPro Live seminar at Wembley Stadium.

“You would need to devote a bit more money on cricket pitches in France than at the U.S. but it is not impossible.”

“I think that the majority of the members, and clearly myself, think the time is correct,” Richardson added. “I think we’ve come to the conclusion that the general benefit to the game of assisting to globalise grow and it will outweigh any negatives.”

Richardson explained any approach is for cricket’s shortest format.

The IOC had made clear that there were limits on athlete numbers, which could indicate a contest of six to eight federal sides at level.

There have been concerns while preventing the calendar in a time of the cricket season could be an additional headache that inclusion can damage the sport’s own occasions.

The issues that golf endured, with many leading players could count against cricket. Golf returned last year at Rio for the first time since 1904.

West Indies and England couldn’t compete as such. Britain represents the home countries at the Olympics along with England, while Jamaica and other Caribbean countries compete. However, India could have a true decoration opportunity.

“The benefit is not too much about which groups go to the Olympics,” said Richardson. “It is more that once your sport is still an Olympic sport, it provides access to government financing in countries in which they want the money.”

After being granted a fixture against the MCC, the cricketers of Afghanistan will play at Lord.

The 50-over match in the home of world cricket was supported by the Marylebone Cricket Club on Friday.

“I am thrilled that we will be welcoming Afghanistan to Lord’s this summer,” MCC president Matthew Fleming explained.

“I’ve observed first-hand the talent and passion for cricket the country has, and that fixture may only be a fantastic thing for its continuing growth of Afghan cricket.”

New Zealander Brendon McCullum will stunt the MCC for its match on July 11 – the day after the finish of England’s test match against South Africa.

Afghanistan made their debut in 2015 in the ICC Cricket World Cup, superbly defeating Scotland and pushing Sri Lanka hard.
